Cosmo Jarvis - 'Crazy Screwed Up Lady' (Song Review)

I have to admit that, of all the singles I've reviewed over the last couple of months, the latest one to find its way to me probably held the greatest promise; not because it was from a band I knew or because it had come highly recommended, but simply because of the artist's name! The track was called 'Crazy Screwed Up Lady' and if that wasn't enough to catch your eye then wait for the name of the artist... Cosmo Jarvis!

Born Harrison Cosmo Kikoryan Jarvis (Names don't come much more impressive than that) in New Jersey, he grew up in Devon, even supporting his fellow Devon trio, Muse, at their homecoming gig in Teignmouth. So that's quite an endorsement but does his latest track live up to all this potential?

The song itself is definitely energetic; a bit like a hyper-active Jamie T meets electro-folk, an interesting combination indeed! There's no denying that it's catchy, especially the last line of the chorus: "Ladddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy" (if you listen to it, you'll understand what I mean), but there is something about the song that I'm not sure about!

Perhaps it's just that this track isn't my cup of tea but maybe there's more to it than that! Maybe it's the fact that Cosmo is described in the musical press as "a new kind of artist" (Last FM) with the "most raw talent" around (according to Wall of Sound MD Mark Jones), yet for me this unique quality seems to be lacking. Sure, the song is fun to listen to and entertaining enough in its own right but it just doesn't seem to life up to the hype! With such an unusual and attention-grabbing name, it would have been great if the sound itself could have been equally exciting! But give Cosmo a listen and make up your own mind, perhaps I'm just one 'Crazy Screwed Up' reviewer!
