The Liberty Stadium crowd witnessed the second goalless draw in a row as an in-form Swansea City side were able to gain a point against league leaders, Queens Park Rangers.
A missed penalty from David Cotterill could have given the home side all three points in an encounter that was dominated by both sets of defenders.
The game was very tasty from the start, resulting in seven yellow cards. QPR captain Adel Taaraebts tackle on Joey Allen was particularly reckless; it could have been a red card. It caused a small confrontation between both teams that resulted in Adel Taaraebts being substituted after the booking. Angel Rangel was also cautioned amongst the clash.
Swansea City made one change to the starting line up as penalty taker Cotterill replaced the injured Mark Gower. QPR were without Akos Buzcaky after he limped off the game with Norwich on Saturday.
The game involved two of the Championship in-form teams. Swansea were unbeaten at home and Queens Park Rangers were unbeaten wherever they played.
The first half an hour was a very cagey affair with QPR edging it slightly, captain Adel Tarraebt looked dangerous on the attack, setting up Matt Connolly for a few shots that the Swansea defence did well to block.
QPRs’ best chance in the first half came from a Hogan Ephraim shot that came in from a tight angle. Dorus De Vries did well to block the shot but Jamie Mackie should have done better with the follow up as he drove the ball straight into the side netting from close range.
The big chance for the home side came when talisman Darren Pratley stormed into the box after a quick free kick. He was judged to have been taken down just in the box as the midfielder attempted to pull the ball back.
Welsh international Cotterill stepped up to take the penalty but his low shot to the left hand side of the goal was no match for QPR keeper, Paddy Kenny. That was to be David Cotterill’ last action of the game as he was taken off at the interval for fellow welsh man, Joey Allen.
After the break it was Swansea who came out the stronger side, Joey Allen sat back which allowed Orlandi and Pratley to get further forward, Orlandi himself had a shot from outside the box which went over the crossbar.
Adel Taaraebt continued to look dangerous for the London club and was always on hand to give the Swansea defence something to worry about; it was his clever through ball which gave QPR their best chance of the game. Jamie Mackie was on the end of the ball and had plenty of time to get his shot away. De Vries made himself big and prevented the ball from going over the line.
Swansea was not going to settle for a goalless draw and went all out attack as they threw Frank Nouble and Craig Beattie into the mix. Their risk almost paid off as Scott Sinclair came close from a long distance shot. Frank Nouble also had opportunities; one from Darren Pratley’s cross that he was unable to get his footing right for.
Swansea had one final opportunity that came from a corner; Gary Monk headed the ball straight to the feet of Darren Pratley who directed the ball goal bound. Unfortunately for the home crowd, Ephraim was on hand to clear off the line.
The final whistle went with both sides happy with a point. It was a hard fought big game whereby the defenders were the real winners. Ashley Williams was awarded the man of the match.
Cardiff City was able to pick up a late winner at Coventry which decreased QPRs lead at the top to two points. Swansea remains in the play-off positions after the night’s results.
Swansea will now look to continue their unbeaten run against Svens’ Leicester City on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Stadium.
